This presentation will summarise the major findings of US and UK research into the future impact of object technology on software development and deployment. The presenter will also describe the mission, achievements and roadmap for OMG - the world's largest software consortium.

Object technology is set to bring about a fundamental change to the way we develop, use, re-use, distribute, deploy and maintain computer software. Object technology generally, and OMG's standards specifically, are likely to have a major impact on software development and the whole of the software industry during the next ten years. Developments in object technology hold out the prospect of the creation of a component-based software industry, in which applications are assembled from components from many sources; which can be deployed on multiple platforms; and can interoperate with other components and applications in a heterogeneous operating environment. The role of OMG in creating, by consensus, object technology standards is proving a vital one for the software industry.

Target group: Software developers, End-user technical staff, IT researchers and consultants.
Knowledge required: Basic understanding of object technology, operating system components, and the problems inherent in building distributed applications.
