Novell Benelux bvba.
As companies rightsize their IT environment, Novell experiences more and more that companies choose NetWare for network services and UNIX for business-critical applications. In 1994, approximately 1 out of every 3 NetWare sites was also using UNIX. Since Novell acquired UNIX System Labs a year ago, it has defined its goals with UNIX as following: keep the UNIX specifications open, drive the unification of UNIX, grow the UNIX industry and establish UnixWare as preferred UNIX implementation. To ensure industry support for a unified UNIX, Novell transferred the trademark of UNIX to the independent body X/Open, which is now in charge of branding UNIX implementations.
Novell also supports the UnixWare Technology Group, which groups several leading UNIX vendors. Input from the UTG is used by Novell for future developments of UnixWare. UTG's goals are to standardize common UNIX applications, guide the advancement of UnixWare and related technologies and increase the market awareness of UnixWare.
For the future, Novell intends to enhance UnixWare with symmetrical multiprocessing, while the microkernel technology will ensure a yet closer integration between Netware and UnixWare. UnixWare will also go along the path of object orientation.
